Yoshitha Rajapaksa, the second son of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, was arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) this morning (June 17).
Issuing a statement clarifying the reasons for the arrest, CIABOC said that Yoshitha was taken into custody over irregularities regarding his recruitment to the Sri Lanka Navy in 2006 and allegations of corruption surrounding an overseas training opportunity.
He had been initially summoned to appear before the commission on Monday, but he informed authorities that he was unable to attend due to a Court of Appeal hearing scheduled for the same day.
Context
In its statement, CIABOC alleged that during the recruitment of cadet officers for the Executive Branch of the Sri Lanka Navy in 2006, Yoshitha was enlisted even though he did not fulfill the prescribed qualifications.
Additionally, CIABOC alleged that Yoshitha secured an opportunity to participate in a training course at the British Royal Naval College utilizing government funds, thereby aiding and abetting an offense of corruption.
CIABOC stated that he was arrested on these two charges.
