WhatsApp has begun rolling out its new username feature, no longer requiring users to share their phone numbers to use the service.
The current rollout will allow users to reserve a unique handle ahead of a wider, full launch later this year.
The feature is being released in phases and users will be notified of its availability as it expands globally.
The update
When the feature becomes available, users can secure their preferred name by navigating to Settings > Account > Username in the latest version of the app.
Once enabled, the feature will hide phone numbers from new personal or business contacts during first-time conversations.
The adjustment aims to shift standard interactions from "What's your number?" to "What's your WhatsApp?" across the platform.
