The death toll from the violent clashes at the Negombo Prison earlier this month has risen to 31 after two more prison officers passed away.
The officers were receiving treatment at the National Hospital in Colombo; one officer succumbed to their injuries on Monday (July 13) and the other on Tuesday (July 14) morning.
A total of ten prison officers have died as a result of the clashes, alongside 21 inmates.
Context
Violent clashes broke out at the Negombo Prison on July 5 before escalating further the following day.
Initial investigations claimed that two groups of inmates linked to organized crime and drug trafficking had clashed inside the prison.
A Cabinet-approved independent committee was appointed to investigate the violence in the aftermath, with the Criminal Investigation Department and the Police also launching inquiries of their own.
