Context
The no-confidence motion was brought by opposition MPs in response to the unrest at Negombo Prison earlier this month.
They argued that the Minister had failed to fulfill his duties and responsibilities in ensuring the safety of the prisoners.
The clash at the prison resulted in the deaths of 10 prison officers and 21 inmates.
