The government is targeting an addition of 132 kilometres to the country's highway system by 2030, the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development has said.

In a social media post, the Ministry stated that four projects are in the pipeline that will cover this distance.

Of these projects, Phase 1 of the Central Expressway—a 37-kilometre stretch between Kadawatha and Mirigama—and Phase 3, a 33-kilometre stretch from Pothuhera to Galagedara, are already under construction.

Context

According to figures from the Road Development Authority, Sri Lanka currently has 12,622 kilometres of national highways and 313 kilometres of operational expressways.

In addition to existing construction, the first stage of the Kurunegala–Dambulla highway project—a 38-kilometre stretch connecting Kurunegala to Galewela—is scheduled to begin by the end of the year.

Furthermore, the first phase of the Ruwanpura Highway project, covering a 24-kilometre stretch, is also set to commence this year.
