The Colombo Municipal Council has reduced its tax on entertainment

The tax levied by the Colombo Municipal Council on all entertainment categories has been reduced.

Colombo Mayoress Vraie Cally Balthazaar said that the tax cuts were approved through a proposal in the CMC’s 2026 Budget, with the relevant gazette notification now issued.

The tax cuts will make it cheaper to conduct concerts, organize sports competitions, and screen movies.

Mayoress Balthazaar, in a social media post, noted the cuts were in line with requests to the CMC to create more opportunities for the people of Colombo to enjoy entertainment, culture, and sport.

Among the adjustments is the reduction of the tax on conducting local concerts from 12% to 7%, which the Mayoress said was done with the hope of giving greater support to Sri Lanka’s artists and the local creative industry.

The Mayoress also urged event organisers to ensure the benefit of these tax reductions reaches the public, encouraging them to reflect the changes in ticket prices to make concerts and events more affordable.
