Sri Lanka's javelin thrower Rumesh Tharanga continued his impressive start to the 2026 season, placing second at the Rabat Diamond League in Morocco on Sunday.
Tharanga, who is currently seventh in the World Athletics Rankings for the event, finished behind two-time World Champion and 2024 Olympic Bronze medalist Anderson Peters of Grenada.
Tharanga's best effort came in the opening round of the competition when he threw for 85.97 metres, holding first place until the fourth round, when Peters edged ahead with a throw of 86.08 metres.
Tharanga's rise
Tharanga has had a meteoric rise this season, setting a new national record in the men's javelin of 89.37 metres at a meet in Diyagama in March.
No one in the world has thrown further in 2026.
Tharanga is scheduled to return to the Diamond League circuit on Thursday (June 4), when he faces off against Peters again in the Rome leg of the competition.
Diamond League
The Diamond League is the highest level of competition in track and field athletics outside of the World Championships and the Olympics, with participation being through invite only.
Each Diamond League meet is a standalone competition, but athletes accumulate points across the season based on where they finish.
The top performers in each discipline qualify for the Diamond League Final, where the overall series winner is crowned.
