Tourist arrivals into Sri Lanka dropped by 3.3 percent in August 2026 compared to the same period last year, official data showed.
Data released by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) showed that 191,704 tourist arrivals were recorded last month, compared to 196,845 in August 2025.
Sri Lanka has welcomed 1,535,122 visitors into the island through the end of August, which is slightly lower than the 1,566,523 total visitors recorded during the first eight months of last year, marking a minor year-on-year shortfall.
Background
The August slowdown comes shortly after authorities revised their full-year target for 2026 downward – from an initial target of 3.0 million tourists to 2.7 million.
They also expected a reduced revenue of $4.2 billion from $5.0 billion that was earlier targeted.
Tourism officials cited earlier regional geopolitical disruptions in the Middle East as a contributor to suppressed international travel during the middle of the year.
Revised targets
To reach the revised 2.7 million target, Sri Lanka needs 1.16 million visitors in four months.
Tourism authorities are relying on the winter season, backed by a Rs. 1.5 billion campaign in key markets like India, the UK, China, Germany, Russia, and Australia.
Following this interim initiative, a larger Rs. 5.0 billion campaign will launch in early 2027 to target high-yielding niche markets, including marine, wellness, and adventure travel.
