Sri Lanka suffered a crushing defeat against the West Indies, losing by an innings and 217 runs on the fourth day of the first Test in Antigua.
The massive margin of defeat marks Sri Lanka's worst-ever Test loss against the West Indies, as well as their fourth-worst result away from home.
Sri Lanka were bundled out for just 101 in their second innings, recording their lowest-ever Test score against the Caribbean side.
The second and final Test of the series is scheduled to begin on Friday, July 3rd.
The Result
In conditions that heavily favored the quicks from day one, captain Dhananjaya de Silva (120) and Dinesh Chandimal (54) fought valiantly to lift Sri Lanka to a respectable 308 in their first innings.
The hosts piled on the runs before declaring at a massive 626 for nine, securing a commanding 318-run lead.
In response, only two Sri Lankan batsmen scored double figures in their second innings, with the quintet of West Indies’ fast bowlers taking all of Sri Lanka’s wickets over their two innings in the Test.
Best Performers
West Indies batter Amir Jangoo stole the headlines with a monumental 233, marking his maiden international century in only his second Test match.
The home team’s captain, Roston Chase, provided brilliant support with a century of his own and together with Jangoo putting on a world-record 401-run partnership for the sixth wicket.
For Sri Lanka, outside of De Silva’s first-innings century, fast bowler Milan Rathnayake was the lone bright spot with the ball, claiming his career-first five-wicket haul – five wickets for 124 runs – during the marathon West Indies innings.
