Sri Lanka passport holders will no longer be eligible for Thailand’s visa-exemption scheme

Thailand has ended its visa-exemption scheme for Sri Lankan passport holders effective September 15, 2026, the Royal Thai Embassy in Colombo has announced.

In an advisory, it stated that all travelers must obtain a visa prior to departure from Sri Lanka to Thailand through the official Thai e-Visa system (www.thaievisa.go.th).

The embassy added that it would not accept in-person or physical visa applications.

Background

In July last year, Thailand introduced a visa-exemption scheme that allowed passport holders from 93 countries and territories, including Sri Lanka, to enter the country without a visa for up to 60 days.

However, it has decided to end that scheme and introduce new rules under which 60 countries and territories will qualify for visa-free stays of up to 30 days.

Sri Lanka is not on the list of countries that will benefit from this scheme; therefore, its passport holders will now be required to apply for an e-Visa.
