Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) on Thursday (September 3) confirmed that its women's team has qualified for the 2027 ICC Women's Champions Trophy by virtue of its ranking at the qualification cut-off date.
Sri Lanka was stripped of the tournament's hosting rights earlier this week, raising concerns that this would potentially cost the team its place in the inaugural edition, which features the top six ODI teams.
However, because Sri Lanka held the sixth rank on the July 3 qualification cut-off date, the team will retain its spot in the tournament.
Background
Sri Lanka’s cricket administration is currently governed by an interim committee following the resignation of the previous elected office bearers, led by Shammi Silva, in April.
Reports indicated that these resignations stemmed from pressure by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who had promised to reform SLC in his election manifesto.
A Transformation Committee was subsequently appointed to oversee the reforms and draft a new cricket constitution.
However, because the ICC does not recognize interim administrations, Sri Lanka was demoted to observer status by cricket's global governing body and, consequently, lost the hosting rights for the 2027 Women’s Champions Trophy.
