Member of Parliament Namal Rajapaksa, who is currently being held in remand custody, has been given special security and will be allowed home cooked meals.
Reports quoting Media Spokesman for the Prisons Department Senaka Palletenna said that these arrangements had been made following requests on behalf of the MP.
Rajapaksa is in remand custody until September 18, following an order from the Colombo Magistrate’s Court issued last Friday (September 4).
Background
Rajapaksa was arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption last Friday on allegations that he received Rs. 100 million in bribes in connection with the controversial SriLanka-Airbus deal.
A businessman, in an affidavit given to the commission, had stated that he had given the bribes to Rajapaksa, after it was transferred into his company by the wife of former SriLankan Airlines CEO Kapila Chandrasena.
Rajapaksa’s lawyers have argued that the arrest was made solely on this businessman’s testimony, questioning its credibility and consistency.
