Sri Lanka's Rumesh Tharanga surged to victory in the men's javelin event at the Doha Diamond League meet, defeating a highly competitive field.
Tharanga sat in fourth place after the first three rounds of the event before producing a massive effort of 88.68 metres, which was enough to launch him into the lead.
He then held on to first place, pushing Grenada's Anderson Peters into second and Curtis Thompson, the bronze medallist at the 2025 World Championships, into third.
Context
Tharanga's victory in Doha marks his second Diamond League win this season, following his historic record-breaking performance in Rome earlier this month.
Coupled with his recent triumph at the Ostrava Golden Spike meet in the Czech Republic, Tharanga moved to second in the World Athletics’ men’s javelin rankings, and this success will push him closer to the world number one spot currently held by Germany's Julian Weber.
Weber has not competed internationally since finishing fifth at the World Championships in Japan last year.
