Sri Lanka's Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage capped off a series of impressive performances in the Diamond League Circuit by winning the Men's Javelin in the final meet of the season in Brussels on Saturday.
A throw of 89.04 metres on his third attempt was enough for Tharanga to hold off the competition and become the first Sri Lankan to be crowned a Diamond League Champion.
This was Tharanga's fifth win out of six events he took part in the Diamond League this year.
Background
At Saturday's meet in Brussels, Tharanga had below-par efforts of 80.42 metres and 79.73 metres in his first two attempts before his event-winning throw.
Poland's Dawid Wegner was second with a distance of 87.47 metres, while Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago was third with a throw of 83.99 metres.
This was Tharanga's fifth successive victory in the Diamond League this season.
Career year
Tharanga burst onto the global stage this year, winning the Kip Keino Classic in Kenya in March, and winning all but one of the meets he competed in.
He threw a personal best of 92.62 metres at the Rome Diamond League meet, which was the eighth-best throw in Men's Javelin history, and also a national record.
His performances have also earned him a spot in World Athletics' Ultimate Championship next week (September 11–13) in Budapest, Hungary.
