President Anura Kumara Dissanayake will present the 2027 budget proposals in Parliament on November 12

Parliament will debate the proposals in the Appropriation Bill for 2027 from November 13 to December 14, its Communication Department said today (September 30).

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, in his capacity as Finance Minister, will present the national budget in Parliament during the Second Reading on November 12, with the bill to be tabled in Parliament for its First Reading on October 7.

The Third Reading of the bill will take place in December, after which it will be put to a final vote.

Background

The annual budget is the government’s plan on how much revenue it intends to generate and where it plans to spend public money across ministries and government bodies.

The budget proposals need to pass through three stages – first a basic introduction of estimations, then a policy speech by the Finance Minister, and finally a closer scrutiny of the proposals by Parliament.

During this period, Parliament will meet every day, except public holidays and Sundays, until the proposals are voted on.
