Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP Chaminda Wijesiri has been sentenced to one-and-a-half years in prison by the Badulla High Court.
Wijesiri was found guilty on several charges including assaulting and intimidating officers of the Police Narcotics Bureau in an incident in Bandarawela in 2019.
On June 24th this year, the court found Wijesiri and his former security officer guilty, with another accused, who was Wijesiri’s driver, passing away during the course of the case’s hearings.
Context
The incident, which led to Wijesiri’s prosecution, took place in February 2019, when the officers are said to have overtaken the vehicle Wijesiri was travelling in, near the Bandarawela town round about.
The three accused had then got into a confrontation with the officers, which led to an altercation, where they assaulted and intimidated the officers.
The sentencing of the accused was deferred to today following the demise of Wijesiri’s driver.
