Niroshan Dickwella returns to Sri Lanka’s Test squad after three years for first India Test

Sri Lanka named its 16-member squad for the upcoming first Test against India, recalling wicketkeeper-batsman Niroshan Dickwella three years after he last featured for the national team.

Dickwella’s call-up follows an injury to regular wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis, who injured his hamstring in the early stages of this year’s Lanka Premier League.

Dickwella's most recent appearance with the national team, in any format of the game, was in 2023, when he played the first of a two-Test series in New Zealand.

Background

Sri Lanka are hosting India in a two-Test series beginning in Galle on Saturday.

The second Test will be played in Colombo, starting on August 23rd.

The series will count towards both teams’ respective Test World Championship campaigns, in which India are currently in fifth and Sri Lanka in sixth.

The top two teams in the World Test Championship will feature in a one-final for the 2025-2027 cycle in June.

Sri Lanka squad

A notable absence for Sri Lanka is opening batsman Pathum Nissanka who, like Kusal Mendis, has not fully recovered from injury.

Nissanka aggravated a wrist injury during Sri Lanka’s most recent Test assignment in the West Indies in June.

Dilshan Madushanka and uncapped all-rounder Keshara Nuwantha are the other additions to the squad, replacing Kasun Rajitha and Isitha Wijesundara.

Kamindu Mendis has been named Vice Captain to Dhananjaya de Silva in Kusal Mendis’ absense.
