Namal Rajapaksa remanded until September 18 by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court

Member of Parliament Namal Rajapaksa was remanded until September 18 by the Colombo Chief Magistrate following his arrest by the Bribery Commission today.

Rajapaksa was arrested for allegedly accepting Rs. 100 million in bribes linked to SriLankan Airlines' Airbus procurement.

CIABOC noted the arrest followed an extensive probe based on statements from a Sri Lankan businessman, France-based Airbus officials, and evidence gathered during investigation.

Background

CIABOC alleges that €1,454,651.24 was initially received as a bribe into a Standard Chartered Bank account in Singapore under the name BIZ Solutions INC.

From that total, US$ 800,000 was subsequently transferred to an OCBC Bank account in Singapore belonging to Sabre Vision Holdings LTD, a company owned by a Sri Lankan businessman.

Corresponding to those funds, CIABOC alleges that Rajapaksa received Rs. 100 million in cash from the Sri Lankan businessman on multiple occasions between 2014 and 2015.
