Mandatory seat belt rule for vehicles travelling on expressways to come into effect on September 19

Vehicles will not be permitted to enter expressways unless all occupants are wearing seat belts, beginning September 19.

A gazette making seat belts mandatory on expressways was issued on September 25, 2025, with a one-year grace period given to fit all vehicles – particularly those not factory-fitted – with seat belts.

Director of Traffic Management and Road Safety, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Manoj Ranagala, said a fine of Rs. 1,000 will be imposed on drivers and passengers found traveling without wearing seat belts.
