Former National Transport Commission (NTC) Chairman Renuka Perera has reportedly been arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC).
Perera, a member of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), was arrested over corruption allegations linked to the irregular issuance of bus permits.
He is expected to be produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court for further legal proceedings.
Background
Perera’s arrest stems from his tenure as NTC Chairman in 2014.
He is alleged to have issued 56 Southern Expressway passenger service permits to third parties without following the statutory procedures outlined in the National Transport Commission Act No. 37 of 1991, while also failing to collect mandatory annual license fees.
CIABOC reportedly stated that this resulted in unlawful financial losses to the State while granting improper advantages to private operators.
