The Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court ordered the release of the former Chairperson of the National Lotteries Board (NLB), Shyamila Perera, on bail, after she was arrested earlier on Tuesday on corruption charges.
The arrest was made by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) in connection with an alleged financial fraud committed during her tenure as the NLB Chairperson.
Perera was released on two surety bails amounting to Rs. 1 million each and was imposed with an overseas travel ban.
The Allegations
The primary charge against her is for recruiting three officials on a contract basis outside the approved procedure for positions that were neither within the approved cadre nor vacant.
The three individuals—two of whom were hired as coordinating officers and one as a management assistant—were allegedly assigned to work on the staff of then Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake.
The suspect had allegedly paid the salaries and allowances of these individuals with the NLB receiving no services from them.
