Member of Parliament Ravi Karunanayake was arrested on Monday (August 31) after appearing before the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption.
While the commission had not initially confirmed the charges, reports indicate he was arrested over the irregular recruitment of individuals to the National Lotteries Board.
It is alleged that these individuals were later deployed to Karunanayake’s personal staff.
Background
Karunanayake had reportedly been summoned by the commission at least three times previously but failed to appear.
Officials from the commission visited his residence on Saturday, but Karunanayake was absent at the time.
The former minister arrived at the Bribery Commission this morning and was formally arrested after questioning.
