The Public Utilities Commission announced a revision of electricity tariffs on Monday, with the majority of consumers facing a 4.3% increase on their bills.
These new tariffs will come into effect starting from April 1, with increases varying based on monthly consumption.
The smallest increase is for the 1,849,241 consumers who use between 0-30 units – the category that most electricity users fall under – who will see an increase of a maximum of Rs. 15 on their monthly bill.
Religious institutions and places of worship consuming more than 180 units per month will see a 9.6% tariff increase, though those consuming less than 180 units have been spared from any increase entirely.
On the commercial and public sector front, both the general purpose consumer category and the industrial sector face an 8% increase, while the hotel sector has been handed a slightly steeper rise of 9.9%.
Government institutions, however, bear the heaviest burden among all non-domestic categories, with tariffs climbing by 14.4% -- the highest increase across the board, signalling that the state itself will not be shielded from the rising cost of electricity.
