Dhananjaya de Silva has stepped down as Sri Lanka’s Test captain

Sri Lanka’s Test captain, Dhananjaya de Silva, has decided to step down from the role with immediate effect, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said today.

A media release from SLC state that de Silva, in his letter of resignation as captain, said, “It’s my genuine opinion that the mantle should go down to the next generation”, while confirming that he would still be available to represent Sri Lanka.

SLC did not mention who will take over from de Silva, with Sri Lanka’s next Test assignment in Pakistan next month.

Background

An all-rounder, though more prolific as a batsman, de Silva took over the Test captaincy from Dimuth Karunaratne in January 2024.

De Silva captained Sri Lanka in 18 Tests, winning seven, losing eight and drawing three.

Sri Lanka are currently seventh in 2025-2027 cycle of the World Test Championship, having finished sixth at the end of the 2023-2025 cycle.

He led Sri Lanka to six victories in the first eight Tests he captained, but had just one win in the last ten Tests.
