Defending champions Argentina pulled off a stunning, come-from-behind 2-1 win over England in their World Cup semi-final on Wednesday.
Argentina scored twice in the last seven minutes, cancelling out England’s go-ahead goal ten minutes into the second half.
Awaiting Argentina in the final is Spain, while England will face France in the third-place play-off on Saturday.
Winning goals
England took the lead in the 55th minute when forward Anthony Gordon finished neatly past Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, after Morgan Rogers crossed from the right wing.
Argentina pushed for an equalizer, but England’s stubborn defence and excellent saves from their goalkeeper Jordan Pickford kept the defending champions at bay.
However, a long-range strike from midfielder Enzo Fernández flew past Pickford in the 85th minute for Argentina to equalize, before substitute Lautaro Martínez popped up at the far post to head in a cross from Lionel Messi in second-half added time (92nd minute).
Argentina's progress
Much has been made of Argentina’s relatively easy Group Stage opponents, but their progress through the knockout stages has been filled with dramatic late goals and extra-time winners.
Having overcome Algeria (3-0), Austria (2-0), and Jordan (3-1) in the Group Stage, they were taken into extra time by Cape Verde in the Round of 32 before winning 3-2.
They produced a stunning comeback from 2-0 down to score three goals in the final 11 minutes to edge past Egypt 3-2 in the Round of 16, before being taken into Extra Time by 10-man Switzerland in the Quarter-Finals, winning 3-1 to set up the Semi-Final clash against England.
